The gaddi bride wears a bright printed gown of cotton called the luanchiri, which is a voluminous, ankle length skirt stitched to a sleeveless bodice. The luanchiri is held in place by a long, black felted rope, dora, that wraps around her waist. Garments worn under this include a red kurta and suthan. A red chadru embellished with gota covers her head. The beautiful bride possesses exquisite silver jewelry-chak, a dome shaped ornament adorns her head, chiri her forehead, chandanhar her neck, bangles-gojru and kangnu in different designs-her arms, and panjeb her ankles. Her only gold ornament is the besar-a large nath pierced through her nose. The groom wears a full-length, red gown, kad, with the centre front open. It is held in pace by a white waistband, patka. Underneath the kad, he wears a suthan, fitting trousers, and adorns his head with a turban, safa, embellished with a peacock feather. |
